About Us

Beginning in 2009, Sandhills Volleyball Club has always strived to provide girls in the Pee Dee region and its surrounding areas with an opportunity to play club volleyball. With just one club-level team in our inaugural year to the 2020-2021 season offering 6 teams, to growing to 10 teams in the 2022 season that sent multiple teams to AAU Nationals for the first time in club history! We will continue to offer both Power and Club teams. With this comes higher-level tournaments, better exposure to college coaches, and more competition both inside and outside of our gyms.

Our Mission

Sandhills Volleyball Club is a member of USA Volleyball (USAV), Amateur Athletic Union (AAU), and the Palmetto Region of USAV. Our club travels to tournaments in South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia, and Florida. This will allow our club to grow each player’s club experience and continue our never-ending goal of creating a perennial volleyball club right here in the Pee Dee area.

At Sandhills Volleyball Club, we are proud to say we are the ONLY Gold Medal Squared (GMS) and Art of Coaching (AOC) -certified club in the state of South Carolina.

This certification means that we are trained and certified to teach and train the same techniques and coaching philosophies being used by the 2020 Olympic Gold Medal winners, the U.S. Women’s National Team. Gold Medal Squared believes in improving the quality of volleyball players and volleyball coaches. Through years of refinement, they have developed a unique process by which volleyball coaches are given the necessary tools to teach the skills to their players, to understand the tactics of the game, to make better use of limited time with their players, and to develop winning programs. This process is based on studied scientific principles from human kinetics, organizational behavior, statistics, and psychology.

  • What is the tournament schedule like?

Tournaments usually start the first week in January and run every other weekend until June.  There are tournaments every weekend that we can attend if we wish, but we usually stay on an every other weekend schedule to allow time to work on skills in between games. We will be attending AAU Nationals in Orlando, FL and two additional tournaments with our SVBC National teams. SVBC Red Regionals Teams tournaments will end after Regionals.

  • How long do tournaments last?

Single-day tournaments run from 8 am to at least 5 pm, sometimes longer.  Multi-day tournaments last for 6 hours on the first day, and times will vary on any other days based on pool and bracket placement.

  • Will my daughter determine what position(s) she plays?

Players will be given the option to request two positions at tryouts for consideration, and once on a team, will compete at the primary position listed, but will also be considered for the secondary position.  If a coach thinks a player may benefit the team at a different position than the ones listed, the coach may ask the player to consider moving to help the team.

  • What makes Sandhills Volleyball Club different from other clubs in the area?

SVBC is the only club in our area, and according to GoldMedalSquared.com, South Carolina, that is GMS certified. GMS stands for Gold Medal Squared and is the basis for principles and techniques that are used to train the US National Team that just won the gold medals in the 2020 Olympics. To be certified as a GMS Club, 80% of the coaching staff has to have attended a clinic taught by GMS. We are proud to say that 100% of our staff is certified. This means you will be receiving proven, winning techniques that are backed by scientific data and not just what a coach pulls from the internet. To us, EVERY team matters. You will receive the best coaching we can give you whether you’re 9 or 18 years old. Every player that comes into our gym will be given an equal opportunity, shown support, and trained in the best way that helps athletes become the best volleyball players, teammates, and young adults that they can be.

  • What can players expect when it comes to playing time?

Players can expect fair, but not always equal, playing time.  Each position on the court will require different things at different times.  Our goal is to keep teams small enough that every kid gets plenty of playing time at tournaments. During pool play at tournaments, every kid will play.  During playoff/bracket play, coaches are instructed to play their best players to win games.

  • What happens if I am unhappy with my coach?

If you are unhappy with your coach, the first step is to talk to your coach about why you are unhappy.  Kids are encouraged to speak to coaches if they have questions regarding playing time, policies, or any issue that is bothering them.  If the player and coach can’t come to an agreement, the player’s parent can contact the coach for further conversation.  If that still doesn’t resolve the conflict, our club director is brought in to listen to both sides and find a resolution.

  • What if my daughter plays a school sport?

We have always said school sports come before travel sports.  We want to support our local high school seasons as much as possible.  We ask at tryouts if anyone plays a winter or spring sport that may interfere with practice schedules or tournaments.  If someone does, we try to find ways to get their team practice days on days where most kids on their team can attend.

  • What experience do the coaches have?

Our coaches have a combined 50+ years of coaching experience at the high school and club level.  88% of our staff has attended at least one GMS clinic to learn the techniques and principles that lead to good volleyball.  You can be assured that no matter which team you end up on, you will receive a coach that is both knowledgeable in the game and passionate about making you the best you can be.

  • How will I know if I made the team?

Teams are posted on our website, Facebook page, and Instagram page after tryouts.

  • What is involved in the tryout process?

Our tryout process involves a combination of individual skills, as well as numerous game-like situation drills.  We want to see you play the game of volleyball instead of hit balls off of a toss or have balls tossed to you to pass.  Players are evaluated on teamwork, communication, attitude, and skill level.

  • What age/division does my daughter belong in?

USAV has a defined age group calendar that will be posted with age groups based on when birthdays fall during the year.  Players will be asked to play at their age group or possibly up one age group if a need arises.

  • How many players are on each team?

This is coach-dependent, but our goal is to keep teams around 9-12 players.  Some coaches may like more to be able to run 6v6 at practice, but we try to keep as many smaller teams as possible to ensure playing time at tournaments.

  • What if my daughter is not ready to play club volleyball?

If your daughter isn’t quite ready to play club volleyball, she may be interested in our development league for ages 13 and under.  Kids older than that are welcome to attend private lessons, skills clinics, or camps that we do throughout the year.

  • Will my daughter be able to “play up” an age group?

Beginning this season, players will be asked to play at their age group or up one age group.  The only exceptions will be kids who already played for us who played up more than one age group that showed competence at the higher age group.  We want players to develop with their own age groups unless they show extraordinary skill to move up.  The benefit of this is for college recruiting purposes.  College recruiters watch 16U and down more than the older age groups as they are normally recruiting for multiple years down the road instead of the current season.
